GOD'S PLAN OF RECONCILLIATION

Isaiah 58

(Even after the vision of chapter 6, it was necessary to

COMMAND Isaiah to reprimand the people for their sin--

since Isaiah evidently thought it to be God's work)

I. MANKIND HAS TRANSGRESSED GOD'S LAWS (v. 1)

A. God cares

B. God warns-- Satan threatens

1. A warning is an opportunity to decide for yourself

while a threat may not relate to your actions at all

2. A warning is an attempt to help avoid future danger

while a threat is an attempt to coerce another

II. MANKIND ATTEMPTS RECONCILLIATION (vv. 2-5)

A. Man calls upon God (v. 2)

1. They did some right things

a. Daily

b. Delight to know

c. Kept ordinances

d. Delight to approach

2. They also did some wrong things

a. Think God is ignorant of their sin

b. Expect God to immediately "obey"

B. Man claims to fast (vv. 3-5)

1. Try to "deal" with God (vs. answer)

2. For public view

3. Abuse self for public esteem

4. "Fast for strife"

C. God disallowed the common definition of fasting

III. GOD DIRECTS MAN TO RECONCILIATION (vv. 6-7)

A. Loose bands of wickedness

1. Undo the heavy burdens

2. Let the oppressed go free

3. Break every yoke

4. Take away from the midst of you the yoke (vv. 9-10)

a. When you put forth the finger

b. When you speak vanity

B. Deal your bread to the hungry

1. Bring the poor, castouts to "thy" house

2. Cover the naked

3. Draw out the soul of the hungry (vv. 9-10)

4. Satisfy the afflicted soul (v. 10)

C. Reconciliation is triangular Man-God-Others-Man

1. "Fast" means "to cover over [the mouth]" (6684)

2. Denying self for others brings reconciliation with

God (cf. Mt. 5:24, hence our ministry, 2 Co. 5:18)



IV. GOD PROMISES BLESSING (vv. 8, 12, 14)

A. Your light shall break forth as the morning

1. Rise in obscurity

2. Your darkness as the noonday

B. Your health shall spring forth speedily

1. Your children shall build the old waste places

2. Shall raise up foundations of many generations

C. Your righteousness shall go before you

1. Be called the "repairer of the breach"

2. Be called the "restorer of paths to dwell in"

D. The glory of the Lord shall be your REREWARD

1. They Lord shall guide you continually

2. The Lord shall satisfy your soul in drought

3. & make fat your bones

4. Be like a watered garden

5. Be like a spring of water whose waters fail not

E. Call & God will answer

V. GOD'S INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING THE DAY OF REST

A. Turn away you foot from the Sabbath

1. By not doing your own pleasure

2. You shall call the Sabbath a delight, holy,

& honorable

B. By honouring God

1. Not doing your own ways

2. Not finding your own pleasure

3. Not speaking your own words
