MATRIMONY

BASIC R.C. BELIEF

The Catechism of the Council of Trent made it clear that the first

end of marriage was not procreation (A CATHOLIC DICTIONARY OF

THEOLOGY, Vol. II, page 1). Pius XI's encyclical CASTI CONNUBI (1930)

stated that the procreation of children was "the primary purpose of

marriage."

POST VATICAN II

From 1989 CATHOLIC ALMANAC. "Catholics are bound by all marriage laws

of the Church. Certain natural laws, in the Catholic view, bind all

men and women, irrespective of their religious beliefs; accordingly,

marriage is prohibited before the time of puberty, without knowledge

and free mutual consent, in the case of an already exisiting valid

marriage bond, in the case of antecedent and perpetual impotence."
