ASH WEDNESDAY

BASIC R.C. BELIEF

The first day of penitential season of Lent, during which the faithful

undertake some deprivation to accentuate their penitential spirit. They

receive the Blessed Ashes on their foreheads during Mass. This is supposed

to remind them to do works of penance.

CHRISTIAN COMMENT

The day before Ash Wednesday is Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday), the final fling

before Lent. It is the custom of some, before Lent, to celebrate with a

carnival (carne val, farewell to meat). In some cultures, this lasts for an

entire week.
