VERONICA

BASIC R.C. BELIEF

One of the scenes of the Stations of the Cross) is a woman wiping the face

of Jesus with a towel; His image was miraculously imprinted on the cloth.

The woman's name is given as St. Veronica.

THE CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA, Vol. XV, p. 362 states, "At first the relic

(towel) itself was called Santa Veronica (the holy true image) from the

words vera icon (true image) which ordinary language soon made Veronica. By

degrees popular imagination mistook this word for the name of a person."
