KNOW GOD AND BE BLESSED (Mt. 4:4)

INTRODUCTION: Jesus is our example for overcoming temptation

A. Verse 4: Know God and be Blessed

B. Verse 7: Trust God and be Blessed

C. Verse 10: Worship God and be Blessed

I. KNOW WHO GOD IS AND BE BLESSED

A. Creator of heaven & earth

1. Ec. 12:1, "Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy

youth."

2. Heb. 11:3 teaches that "the worlds were framed by the

word of God, so that things which are seen were not

made of things which do appear."

B. Provider of life

1. Acts 17:29, "In Him we live, and move, and have our

being."

2. Ps. 36:9, "For with thee is the fountain of life."

3. Jn. 5:26, "For as the Father hath life in himself;

so hath He given to the Son to have life in himself.

v. 27, "And hath given him authority...."

C. Savior of mankind

1. Heb. 2:14, "Forasmuch then as the children are par-

takers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise

took part of the same, that through death he might

destroy him that had the power of death, this is,

the devil;"

2. Acts 4:12, "Neither is there salvation in any other

[man]; for there is none other name under heavaen

given among men, whereby ye must be saved."

D. Judge of all

1. Acts 17:30-31, "And the times of this ignorance God

winked at; but now commandeth all men everywhere to

repent; Because He hat appointed a day, in the which

He will judge the world in righteousness."

2. Rev. 20:11-12, "And I saw a great white throne, and

Him that sat on it.... And I saw the dead, small and

great, stand before God...and the dead were judged out

of those things which were written in the books."

II. KNOW WHAT GOD IS LIKE AND BE BLESSED

A. Kind & compassionate

1. Kind, "Sympathetic, friendly, gentle, tender-hearted,

generous"

2. Compassion, "Sorrow for the sufferings or trouble of

another or others, with the urge to help"

3. Compassion is the desire to help, kindness says he can.

4. Ps. 78:38, God, "being full of compassion, forgave

[Israel's] iniquity, and destroyed them not"

5. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed,

because his compassions fail not."

B. Loving

1. Love is "a strong affection for or attachment to a person

2. 1 Jn. 3:1, "Behold, what manner of love the Father hath

bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.

C. Giving

1. Give, "To turn over the possession of [something] to

someone without cost or exchange."

2. Jn. 3:16, "He gave...

III. KNOW WHAT GOD OFFERS MAN AND BE BLESSED

A. Eternal life

1. Jn. 11:25, "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that

believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live"

2. Jn. 3:36, "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting

life; and he that believeth not the Son shall not see

life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."

B. Peace on earth

1. Ro. 14:17, "For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink,

but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost."

2. Jn. 14:27, "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto

you...let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be

afraid."

3. Ph. 4:7, "And the peace of God, which passeth all under-

standing, shall keep your hearts and minds through

Christ Jesus."

C. Joy that floods the soul

1. Jn. 15:11, "These things have I spoken unto you, that

my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be

full"

2. Jn. 17:13, "And now come I to thee; and these things I

speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled

in themselves

3. Is. 12:3, "Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of

the wells of salvation."

IV. KNOW WHAT GOD WANTS FROM MAN AND BE BLESSED

A. Our obedience: Giving in to the orders of one in authority

B. Our devotion: The giving up of oneself with the seriousness

evoked by a formal vow

C. Our worship and love: Extreme devotion; intense love or

admiration, to do reverence to.

TRUST GOD AND BE BLESSED (Mt. 4:7)

INTRODUCTION: Jesus is our example for overcoming temptation

A. Verse 4: Know God and be Blessed

B. Verse 7: Trust God and be Blessed

C. Verse 10: Worship God and be Blessed

D. Verse 11 is especially important

1. "THEN the devil leaveth him" (Ja. 4:7)

2. "And, behold, angels came and ministered unto him."

(Heb. 1:14, "ministering spirits, sent forth to minister

for them who shall be heirs of salvation")

I. TRUSTING IS NOT THE SAME AS TEMPTING

A. God cannot be tempted, neither does he tempt anyone (Ja. 1:13)

B. Satan will try our faith (as wheat in Peter's case)

1. Our faith in God's power to keep us safe not questioned

2. Our faith that God will work things out is the question

("Jump down here before the temple crowds and they will

believe in you if you are not hurt.")

3. He will try to get you to believe that you can do some

dangerous things and not be hurt:

a. Go to a "clean" movie

b. Wear fasionable (but provocative) clothing

c. Smoke a cigarette occasionally (drink, dip, etc.)

4. Tempt God (by your lack of faith that God will keep you

content) and you cannot count on His protection.

C. God wants us to trust Him

1. 2 Cor. 5:7, "We walk by faith, not by sight."

2. 1 Tim. 6:6, "Godliness with contentment is great gain."

D. WE MUST TRUST GOD - NOT TEMPT HIM

II. THE OBJECT OF THIS TRUST (Ps. 56:3, "What time I am afraid,

I will trust in THEE")

A. Is. 26:3, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind

is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."

B. Is. 40:31, "They that wait upon the Lord....

C. Mt. 28:18, "All power is given unto me in heaven & in earth"

D. Ps. 62:11, "God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this;

that power belongeth to God."

E. Mt. 19:26, "With men this is impossible; but with God

all things are possible."

F. GOD IS THE ONLY SOURCE OF STRENGTH AND WE CAN TRUST HIM
