THE TRIUNE NATURE OF MAN BC-16-4A

WHERE THE SOUL NEVER DIES (2nd of 3) 1 Cor. 15:45

INTRODUCTION

A. Man is a triune being (body, soul & spirit)

B. Man is living in a fleshly body

C. When man begins life, he BECOMES a living soul

I. SOUL AND SPIRIT ARE NOT THE SAME

A. Spirit is the life-force given by God

B. Soul is separate:

1. Heb. 4:12, "For the word of God is quick, and powerful,

and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to

the dividing asunder of soul and spirit"

2. I Thes. 5:23, "I pray God your whole spirit and soul and

body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord

Jesus Christ."

C. Webster: "Regarded as being the immortal... part of a person

and, though having no physical or material reality, is

credited with the functions of thinking and willing, and

hence determining all behavior."

II. THE SOUL IS THE SOURCE OF ALL OUR ACTIONS

A. The Greek word for soul (every case in N.T. 5590) is PSUCHE

(psoo-khay'), the rational and immortal soul

1. We still use the same word, pronounced "psyche" which

Webster says is, "the human soul. The mind...an organic

system reaching all parts of the body."

2. The psyche (mind/soul) is the root of all thought & action

B. The soul is what OBEYS, "Let every SOUL be subject unto the

higher powers" (Ro. 13:1).

C. The EMOTIONS derive from the soul:

1. God (Mt. 12:18), "In whom my soul is well pleased"

2. Jesus (Mt. 26:38), "My soul is exceeding sorrowful"

3. God (Heb. 10:38), "If any man draw back, my SOUL shall

have no pleasure in him"

D. The soul can be TEMPTED:

1. The things "that thy soul lusted after are departed", God

said in Rev. 18:14.

2. 1 Pe. 2:11, Fleshly lusts "war against the soul"

3. Job "vexed his righteous soul...unlawful deeds" 2 Pe 2:8

E. The soul is the source of true WORSHIP:

1. Mk. 12:30, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy

Heart, and with all thy Soul, and with all thy mind"

2. Lu. 1:46, "And Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord"

III. THE SOUL IS IMMORTAL

A. It can be DAMNED:

1. Mt. 16:26, "For what is a man profited, if he shall gain

the whole world, and lose his own soul? or what shall a

man give in exchange for his soul?"

2. Mt. 10:28, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are

not able to kill the soul: but rather fear thim which is

able to destroy both SOUL and body in hell."

B. It can also be SAVED:

1. James 5:20, "he which converteth the sinner from the error

of his way shall save a soul from death"

2. Heb. 10:39, "We are not of them who draw back unto perdi-

tion; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul"

ALTAR CALL:

A. Playing with the soul is dangerous (rich farmer)

B. The hope of salvation is an "anchor of the soul" (Heb. 6:19)
